Celebrating 2017

Celebrating 2017

A note from our Airport Director.

As we draw 2017 to a close, I’m proud that we can look back on another great year of activity and achievements. It really has been a very busy rollercoaster of a year, and I’d like to thank our team who worked non stop throughout.

For the benefit of our enthusiasts, we introduced our live HD webcams. We held various events, introducing our first season of regular Car Boot Sales, our two popular Family Fun and Dog Shows, the UK’s first Pride in Aviation, our annual Firework Spectacular and we welcomed Santa to our three Children’s Christmas Parties.

For the aviators, we invested significantly again in various continuing runway surface grading improvements, hosted several Fly-In Events and a popular GASCo Safety Evening.

To help ensure our facilities are brought up to standard, we invested in a complete refurbishment of our toilets, and installation of our   Children’s Play Area, helping to ensure that our Runway26 Cafe and Bar goes from strength to strength in our 3rd year of operating this facility.

Throughout the year, we’ve welcomed over 80 military visiting helicopters whom it is always a pleasure to welcome, and talking of pleasure, literally hundreds of people took to the air in helicopter pleasure flights. We welcomed to the airfield a brand new flight simulator owned and operated by LAC Flying School and across our 6 Flying Schools 44 people completed their first solo flights with just as many going on to complete their Pilot Licences.

In summer we were treated to a Fly Past by the Lancaster Bomber and many of the enthusiasts who saw this are members of the Friends of Barton Aerodrome, which has gone from strength to strength, hosting Photography Events, and they have supported us by hosting hundreds of people on educational tours around the Airfield.

The original Terminal building has continued its refurbishment and the Veterans Garage who’s aim is to support ex veterans have become fully established, and to aid their support and fundraising working with the Airport have also hosted several well attended car and music events through the year.

My focus now turns to the year ahead, and indeed beyond as we embark on creation of a new 5 year business plan and longer term strategy to ensure that the Airport can be a sustainable, friendly aviation and visitor facility for the enjoyment of our local community, the City of Salford and the wider region.

To this end, I’d welcome feedback from all our customers as this helps us to ensure we can direct our energies to meet the needs of everyone, and invite you to take part by visiting www.visitcityairport.co.uk/survey

I look forward to an exciting year ahead and I’d like to wish all our customers a safe, enjoyable and prosperous 2018.
